Rathmore & District Credit Union celebrate Nora Herlihy legacy
LOCALS GATHER TO CELEBREATE NORA HERLIHY LEGACY WITH RATHMORE & DISTRICT CREDIT UNION
Rathmore & District Credit Union celebrated the legacy of Nora Herlihy with a plaque unveiling ceremony, held on the 28th of September in Ballydesmond.
A large crowd of locals, visitors, and Credit Union representatives from across Ireland gathered to honour one of the community’s most influential natives: Nora Herlihy. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at her birthplace, marking the legacy of the woman whose vision helped spark Ireland’s Credit Union movement.
The celebration continued in the Community Centre, where neighbours and guests shared stories, refreshments, and a lively session of traditional music. It was a fitting tribute to a woman who spent her life championing financial fairness and empowering communities long before such ideas were mainstream.
A teacher by trade and a pioneer at heart, Nora Herlihy’s work in the 1950s and 60s laid the foundations for what is now one of the country’s most trusted, community-driven financial institutions. The gathering served as both a tribute to her extraordinary impact and a reminder that her spirit of cooperation still shapes the Credit Union movement today.
The event marked a proud moment for Ballydesmond - celebrating a local hero whose influence continues to ripple through life in Ireland, generations on.
